Most people attend college when they are young and healthy, but the demands of college life can soon leave even the healthiest amongst us feeling drained and unwell. With work deadlines, financial woes, the cost of student living and cramming for finals all an expected part of student life for many, it’s never been more important to look after your health than your college years. We’ve listed some of the best things that you can do as a college student in order to improve your health and well-being.

Quit Smoking

If you’re studying for a degree program such as a masters in healthcare law and are quite knowledgeable about the healthcare industry, you may feel that taking part in activities such as smoking goes against everything that you stand for as a professional. But, quitting smoking can be difficult, whether you’re a pack-a-day smoker or simply have one or two socially when you’ve been drinking alcohol. Cutting out cigarettes altogether, even if you only have the odd one, can have a huge positive impact on your health. With many healthier alternatives and nicotine replacement therapies to choose from and with lots of support available, quitting has never been easier.


As a student you might feel that you barely have time to exercise, especially if you are constantly doing some kind of college work, or revising for your final exams in an advanced degree such as the MA in healthcare. However, aiming to get at least half an hour per day of exercise, five days per week, will help you to stay strong, energized, and keep on top of your shape whilst in college, along with contributing to a healthy heart and immune system. And, if it is your finances that you’re worried about, there’s no need to join the gym – a brisk daily walk will do the trick!

Drink Water

Many college students believe that in order to be healthier they will need to make some drastic changes. However, many of the lifestyle changes that you can make to improve your health are actually much simpler and easier than you think. One such change is swapping coffee and sugary drinks for plain water, which is much healthier for you and will help to detoxify your body, rather than adding more toxins to it. Even if you still drink coffee or soda daily, making a conscious effort to drink as much water as possible will reap awesome benefits.

Take a Break

Often, students find that their health is damaged due to being overworked. Although working hard at college is of course a great thing and will help you to achieve your goals in the future, there’s a fine line between being hardworking and pushing yourself so far that your health suffers. Avoid working without taking short breaks, and put a stop to the all-nighters if you want to improve your physical and mental health and well-being.

As a student, it’s easy to get into unhealthy habits. But, you don’t have to make drastic changes in order to improve your health!
