The cigarette smokers live quite difficult lives nowadays, as they begin to be publicly banned from smoking indoor in a lot of countries all over the world, the cigarette prices raise constantly and the medical world’s warnings become more and more audible. Did people stop smoking altogether? Not yet. Did people switch to other types of smoking? Certainly, since the invention and development of the electronic cigarettes such as blu e cig, you encounter more and more vapers than smokers every day. But how about the special type of smokers? The cigar smokers and the pipe users’ club? Are they right? Is their type of smoking less harmful? Between pipes, cigars and cigarettes, which one is safer? Science tells us that none of them, but let’s get a little deeper into the details.
Pipes and Cigars
These particular types of smokers will insist on the fact that they don’t inhale tobacco smoke, like the cigarette users do, so from this point of view, they are safer from lung cancer and other disease associated with the almost 4000 toxic substances the classic cigarettes contain. But are they free from risk?
Specialists from WebMD show that one cigar can contain as much tobacco as an entire pack of cigarettes and an average of 100 to 200 milligrams of nicotine, compared to the 8 to 10 milligrams found in a cigarette. So puffing a cigar a day is bad enough, let alone having two. It is not only enough to develop a nicotine addiction, but it also may lead to the same (or even worse) health issues as the cigarette does.
Pipe smokers are a different breed. Pipes are associated with class, style, belonging to an exclusive club, having a lot of pipe using knowledge. It is a sign of some sort of superiority, high intellectual skills and a refined taste for what is good. Apart from a well constructed image, however, inhaling or not the pipe smoke, this habit is just as dangerous as any type of tobacco smoking.
Are There The Same Risks?
Doctors warn cigar and pipe users about the following health damages their habit can produce:
- Cancer. Including the lung cancer too, the cigars and pipes smokers are heavily exposed to mouth, esophagus and larynx cancers, presenting a rate of mortality of four to ten times higher than non-smokers. For both pipe and cigars users, the oral cancer should be the greatest concern, as it can develop on the palate, tongue, gums, lips.
- Lung disease. These types of smokers are more likely to face the nightmare of obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. It doesn’t matter they do not inhale, the quantity of smoke released by a cigar or pipe is significantly larger and more dangerous than the cigarette smoke, thus leading to respiratory problems, doubling the risk of airway damage.
- Heart and circulatory disease. Specialists from WebMD specifically warn cigar smokers that the risk of coronary heart disease and premature death is 30% higher in their case.
Apart from all these, just like the cigarettes, cigars and pipes lead to more common issues, such oral health damages (and some studies told a horror story about cigar and pipe smokers missing an average of four teeth, together with a chronic excruciating bad breath), erectile dysfunctions in men and a higher risk of getting everybody else sick, as secondhand smoke for cigars and pipes is even more dangerous that cigarette secondhand smoking.
Returning to the question of which one is safer or more dangerous, experts can only say this: if you can’t kick the habit or you don’t feel like quitting, at least intensify your medical checkups and submit yourself to regular extensive analyses. It is a lot easier to prevent than to heal.
