This short guide will hopefully explain some of the usual pitfalls and health risks that come alongside the more positive aspects of marriage.

Avoid Extreme Diets before the Wedding

It may be tempting to lose a lot of weight so that you can look your best for the ceremony, and the desire to get in shape fast may lead you to take extreme measures, but there are many reasons why you should avoid doing so. Extreme diets carry with them many health risks that can even cause permanent harm to your body.

Apart from the health risks associated with extreme diets, there is also the fact that starving yourself while also stressing yourself with the pressures of organizing a wedding is going to make you miserable. You don’t want to be feeling miserable, irritable, and most of all weak from hunger, while you are preparing for what is supposed to be one of the best days of your life.

Avoid the Normal Post-Marriage Weight Gain

There has been a lot of research into how much weight women gain after they get married, and why it happens. One of these studies showed that the average weight gain after the wedding was 4.4 lbs (2 kg). It is easy to study numbers and talk about those, but it is much harder to determine why these women gained weight. One of the reasons discussed in the study is the “relaxed dietary and physical activity habits” now that the wedding is over; in other words, the motivation to get fit and lose weight before the ceremony is gone and the temptation to slip back in to old habits is hard to resist.

Another of the reasons talked about in the study is that the women may feel like they have already locked down their marriage, and no longer feel motivated to stay in shape. Whatever the real reason is for this occurrence, which of course will vary from person to person, the important thing to take away from these studies is that you can prevent it. Knowing that you will most likely gain a few pounds after the marriage makes it easier for you to take steps to prevent it.

Stay Motivated After the Wedding

Long after the pretty white dress and turquoise bridesmaid dresses have been put back on the rack, and the pressure to look skinny for the big day has passed, it is important to stay motivated and keep on track with your weight goals. You should probably have an ideal weight in mind, which should be realistic for you personally of course, and make a plan to stay at that weight. This plan should not involve anything harmful such as crash dieting or anything too restrictive that will put unreasonable stress on you.

It is important to remember that everyone has different needs and body types, and because it is normal to gain a few pounds after getting married you should not punish yourself for it by resorting to extreme measures. You also should not become complacent in your eating and exercise habits after the big day, in order to have a happy and healthy relationship in the future.
