Hearing loss among adults can be due to age (hair cells present in the ears experience a slow breakdown as we age) and excessive exposure to loud sounds/noises which damage the ears’ hair cells. However, it is possible to prevent hearing loss by following the tips mentioned below:

1. Stay Away from Excessive Noise

In certain situations, we cannot figure out how loud is actually too loud for our ears. Here is a simple technique to find out: if you feel the need to shout out to get your message across in a noisy environment, then this indicates that it is loud enough to get hearing loss! When you come across such situation, you should move immediately.

2. Change Your Lifestyle

Fortunately, moving from a noisy atmosphere is not the only option to avail. How about bringing little but meaningful changes to your lifestyle? For instance, you can buy devices and appliances which have quite low noise ratings. Furthermore, if you feel that the ambient noise in a gym, restaurant, or movie theater is very loud, request the manager for slowing it down.

3. Ensure Loud Sounds are Not Part of Your Daily Routine

It may be that you simply cannot avoid too loud sounds in specific environments. In this situation, the best advice is to spend as little time in that place as possible. You can leave as early as possible.

4. Wear Earplugs and Earmuffs

Being proactive is a great strategy and works wonders even for preventing hearing loss! So, if you know that you are going to a place full of loud sounds, then get hold of the following hearing protection:

  • Earplugs – You can either buy these from any retailer or get them customized to fit your ears.
  • Earmuffs – Make sure you wear earmuffs in a way that these completely fit your ears while blocking sound perfectly.

5. Do Not Smoke

Surprisingly, smoking cannot only kill your lungs, it can damage your ears too. If you are in the habit of smoking, quit it for the betterment of your ears. If you do not smoke, then ensure that you are not being suffered as a passive smoker.

6. Make Sure You Have Removed Earwax Properly

Waxy buildup present in ears can block sound. However, never use cotton swabs to remove wax from your ear because this can be dangerous. Instead, soften wax by using an irrigation kit and then wash the wax from your ear. If the wax is still hard, consult your doctor and get it removed. Also, ask your doctor if you need digital hearing devices.

7. Check Medications if Required

Unbelievable but true, higher dose of aspirin can lead to hearing loss among various people. In addition, medications that are ototoxic have higher chances of affecting your hearing strength negatively. Therefore, check medications and consult your doctor before having high doses of medications.

8. Go for a Hearing Test

You should get a hearing test appointment with your doctor if you feel difficulty in hearing conversations, are exposed to noisy environments regularly, have close friends or relatives with hearing problems, or experience a ringing sound frequently in your ears.

9. Do Not Listen to Loud Music

You never know how listening to loud music is slowly damaging your ears. To keep your ears healthy, it is advisable to indulge in other hobbies which are not only healthy, but productive too. Some examples include gardening and aerobics.

10. Avoid Specific Recreational Risks

There are some recreational activities such as hunting, riding snowmobile, attending rock concerts, etc. for a long time period which can be the major causes of your hearing loss. Therefore, always wear hearing protectors to stay safe from loud noise.
